Quotable: Humble Thyself

Recall that whatever lofty things you might accomplish today, you will do them only because you first ate something that grew out of dirt.

007

Year of the suave, clever maestro of detached bravado and womanizing.

Just kidding. Let's hope not.

01-07-07. I wish I were not still awake past 5 am but I seem to have no choice in the matter.

Resolutions . . . I don't usually take these too seriously because I figure that if something is really that worth doing, why wait till January? However, there is something comforting and motivating about the 'new day, clean slate' idea and the time frame of one year in which to accomplish something. My aspirations for 2007:

1. No complaining.

This does not mean always being or pretending to be shiny and happy, but I think I will like myself and my life better if I become more intentional about not being so quick to vocalize negative thoughts. This will involve putting daily frustrations, disappointments, and weariness with routine schoolwork in perspective - my real goal is to not feel like complaining as often. And this involves being more gracious with myself and other people in our collective muddled humanity. Mistakes and misunderstandings are part of the deal.

This also does not mean refraining from blogging opinionated and sometimes scathing commentary on the state of the world. Some things are worth getting fired up about. (How many pages I have to read by Monday is not really one of them.)

2. Run a 5k in 22 minutes flat.

This means whacking 1:33 off my current personal best. Crazy? Yes. Doable? We'll see. Resolution #1 feels harder.

3. Finish the sweater that I started crocheting 5 years ago.

This is really a silly resolution because I have already broken umpteen self-imposed deadlines for completion of said sweater. But heck, why not give it another shot. Tomorrow Never Dies, right?

No wait, I meant tomorrow is another day. Shoot . . . it is tomorrow. It has been for nearly 6 hours. OK, I really need to try and sleep now.
